The challenge

A brand this loud needed a shop that stands tall.

Big Willy Distillery makes gin, rum and ale by hand in small batches in Yorkshire. The name comes from William Bradley, the Yorkshire Giant, born in Market Weighton in 1787 and the tallest recorded British man, and the brand carries his story with it: big type, bold colour and a sense of humour.

They needed a website that sold the drinks directly to customers across the UK, told that story properly and could be run day to day by the team, without the site looking like every other template on the shelf.

The challenge

What stood in the way.

  1. A brand with real character

Off-the-shelf ecommerce themes would have flattened the brand. The site had to feel like Big Willy from the first screen: the bold type, the gold and the showman feel of the Yorkshire Giant.

  2. Selling alcohol online

Spirits and ales come with responsibilities. The shop needed a proper age check, clear delivery terms and checkout that works on any device.

  3. Three ranges, one shop

Gins, a dark rum, five ales and gift sets all needed clear routes through the shop, so customers can find a bottle or a gift quickly and search engines can understand each range.

The approach

Designed around the brand. Built in Webflow. Made to sell.

The site was designed and built in Webflow, using Webflow Ecommerce for the shop, cart and checkout. That gives the team one place to manage products, prices, stock, news and recipes, with no plugins to keep updated.

The design leans fully into the brand: heavy condensed type, gold ticket-style buttons, star dividers and rich product photography on black. Each range has its own category page with written introductions, every product page shows size, ABV and tasting notes, and a free-shipping bar runs across the top of every page. An age gate greets every new visitor before they come in.

  • Brand-led web designA custom design built around the Big Willy identity, from the homepage hero to product, story and recipe pages.
  • Webflow Ecommerce shopProducts, categories, gift sets, cart and checkout, all managed by the team in Webflow with UK delivery and free shipping over £50.
  • Age verificationAn 18+ age gate on entry, in line with Challenge 25, with a friendly route out for under 18s.
  • News and recipesCMS-driven news and recipe sections, so the team can share events, farmers markets and cocktail ideas without touching the design.
  • SEO foundationsCategory pages for Yorkshire gin, rum and ales, written introductions, FAQs, page titles and structured data set up from launch.
  • Mobile-first buildFully responsive, with particular care over the mobile shop and checkout, where most drinks orders are placed.

The voyage

How it happened.

  1. Discovery

Getting to know the distillery, the drinks, the Yorkshire Giant story and who buys from them, before any design work began.

  2. Design

Homepage, shop, product and story pages designed around the brand, with the route from landing to checkout kept as short as possible.

  3. Webflow build

Built in Webflow with Ecommerce, CMS collections for news and recipes, the age gate and responsive layouts throughout.

  4. Launch & handover

Products loaded, checkout and delivery tested, SEO set up and the team shown how to run the shop themselves.
